This early idea of hedonism wasn\u2019t popular and was quickly forgotten until Epicurus redefined it. While objects, for example, hold instrumental value and are only valuable because they can be used to acquire other valuable things, intrinsic value is only value in itself. One example of this can be connected to one\u2019s ego, which, unconsciously, is the ruler of one\u2019s actions. Another example can be the pleasure we find in certain foods. When we associate pleasure with eating chocolate, for example, our brain will unconsciously make us hungry for chocolate when we see or smell it, in pursuit of that pleasure again.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-e47e1b8 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e47e1b8\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-03acbd9\" data-id=\"03acbd9\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c81bba8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c81bba8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Normative hedonism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believes that happiness should always be pursued, and it is the single criterion to determine the moral rightness or wrongness of an action. With its rare consideration of the other in this kind of pursuit of pleasure, normative hedonism is often regarded as an egoist version, connected to what is called <\/span><b>hedonistic egoism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the theory that, morally speaking, we should do whatever is most in our interest.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d8e3dff elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d8e3dff\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-638a811\" data-id=\"638a811\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f113b5e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f113b5e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the opposite side of the spectrum, we lastly find <\/span><b>hedonistic utilitarianism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the theory that the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for all concerned, without adding intrinsic moral value to, for example, justice, truth, and relationships. This branch of hedonism is distinct from hedonistic egoism, as it seeks to maximise overall well-being.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-cb1684d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"cb1684d\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-465d91a\" data-id=\"465d91a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42cb995 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42cb995\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the big debates in hedonism is whether helping others is pleasurable. Is it really altruism when one helps another when the real reason behind it is to feel gratification, and not the pure wish of helping for someone else\u2019s good?<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-bb2c9a5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"bb2c9a5\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-44cb3d5\" data-id=\"44cb3d5\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-223325d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"223325d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the final question is: how can we safely be hedonists in our daily lives? It\u2019s all about balance. The main idea to remember is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memento mori<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Death is inevitable and can happen at any moment, so what\u2019s the point of sacrificing the ourselves of the present for a future self who we are not sure will be there? Well, there is a point, but it shouldn\u2019t be the only thing we focus on.
