A Barista's Guide To Coffee

The life of a student sure can be draining. When papers are due, the weather’s grey and sleep is scarce, what better remedy than a warm, uplifting cup of coffee. Malmö is a city full of study friendly cafés, serving what has come to be known to us as the liquid gold. Down below are some of the best you’ll find in town.

#1 Djäkne Kaffebar, Malmö

On Djäknegatan 9, you’ll find Djäkne Kaffebar, a joint coworking space and café. Djäkne is a place where people come to work, study and drink some deliciously made specialty coffee from some of the best baristas in town. Every month you’ll find a new roastery’s products occupying the shelves of Djäkne. As a customer you get to choose between several different kinds of origin and varying taste profiles.

The staff is well educated in the field of coffee, equally as good at hospitality and the vibe is low-key and easy-going. This might all sound a little pretentious to some, which it is to a certain degree, but we’ll let it slide for the sake of heavenly good coffee.

Ups:

  • Wi-fi
  • Study-friendly
  • Varying kinds of coffee
  • Knowledgeable staff

Downs:

  • Few seatings
  • Sometimes crowded
  • Little- to no food past breakfast-time

#2 Love Coffee, Lund

We know what you’re thinking, we’re only at café no. 2 on this list and we’re already moving past Malmö’s city border? Yes, we might have sneaked in a little white lie in the beginning of this article, but trust us when we say this one’s worth the trouble of a 12-minute train ride to Lund central station. Just a few hundred metres away from the station, at Clemenstorget 4, you’ll find Love Coffee, a coffee institution in Skåne county. We’ve tasted a lot of coffee during the years as tired, sleep-deprived students and the coffee at Love Coffee might just be one of the top ones.

Love Coffee is not only a café but also a roastery, focusing on high quality specialty coffee. This fact manifests in the way the baristas are acquainted with the coffee and how it best should be brewed. More easily put, they really know how to work their own coffee. With indie music playing from the speakers, raw wood and concrete acting as the main materials of the interior- the café has a hip and urban vibe to it. Now, if you don’t identify as a hip and urban person, don’t fret, everyone’s welcome at Love Coffee.

Ups:

  • Wi-fi
  • Roastery
  • Study-friendly (until 5pm)
  • Stellar cardamom buns

Downs:

  • Located in Lund

#3 Jord, Malmö

If you don’t feel like travelling to Lund, you can also find Love Coffee in the grinders of Jord, a vegan-friendly café near S:t Knuts square and Folkets Park at Falsterbogatan 1. Jord is a large café with many seatings, usually occupied by students and people taking a break from their usual office. The big windows of the corner café, creates a bright and stimulating atmosphere, ideal for studying.

The staff of Jord will always greet you with a smile and a “no-problem”- attitude, making the place feel super welcoming and familiar, despite its size. Although the focus of Jord isn’t so much the coffee itself, they make it a great addition to their considerable list of all-day brunch foods.

Ups:

  • Wi-fi
  • Study-friendly
  • Vegan-friendly
  • Nice staff

Downs:

  • Coffee is secondary
  • Sometimes crowded

#4 Uggla Kaffebar, Malmö

A few streets down from Jord, right at the corner of S:t Knuts square, lies Uggla Kaffebar. Uggla continues S:t Knuts trend of familiarity and friendliness in its cosy, surprisingly large locale. Stepping into the café, you might feel as if you’ve just stepped into a scenario of a group of friends- which is very much the case. However, give it a minute or two and you’ll find yourself being a part of the ongoing conversations between the regulars across the room. Uggla is all about the meetings between people, but if you’re not feeling chatty, go downstairs and you might find a little more peace and quiet.

Uggla keeps it fun with a few different guest-coffees every now and then, while keeping the Malmö based roastery Solde as a standing coffee supplier. No matter who’s on shift on the day of your visit, you can be sure to experience a friendly barista and a great cup of coffee.

Ups:

  • Wi-fi

  • Familiar atmosphere

  • Varying kinds of coffee

Downs:

  • Sometimes crowded
